Guar Gum Manufacturing

Guar gum is a galactomannon manufactured from milling and screening of dehusked guar seeds, has a variety of uses. Supplied as a light tan granular powder, guar gums are efficient thickeners. They form highly thixotropic aqueous solutions when prepared at concentrations greater than 1%.

Oil drilling and mining industries use guar gum to thicken the drilling fluids which carry cuttings from the drill bit to the surface as the drill bit circulates up and down the borehole. Guar-thickened drilling fluids injected into rock formations are cross-linked to form a semi-solid mass which supports the walls of the formations as oil is extracted.

The textile industry uses guar and derivatized guar gum in dyestuff printing and space dying of woven (flat goods) and tufted (carpeted) textile products. Guars are used in these applications to prevent the migration of dyes and color bleed, and to improve print fidelity. The use of guar enables wet-on-wet printing before fixing the dyes.

The explosives industry also uses guar as a thickener and to aid water retention in the preparation of aqueous nitrate slurries. In low concentrations, guar gum maintains the nitrate slurry in a consistency that can be injected into blasting holes where it is cross-linked to form a semi-solid mass that provides resistance to erosion from underground water.

The construction industry uses guar and derivatized guars as a thickener and water retention agent in drywall joint compounds and textured wall and ceiling coatings. Adding guar improves the workability and leveling properties of these construction materials.

The paper industry uses guar gum as a wet end additive for improved formation, stiffness, and dry strength. Cationic guar is used as a retention aid and as a clarifying agent in the waste water treatment of mill effluent streams.
